We replaced and upgraded the front door stone steps of an end-of-terrace Georgian property in Islington, London. The new staircase is enhanced by our period-correct design, Yorkstone, and our modern waterproofing system that prevents damp and leaks.

The homeowners, Tulin and Matt, are “delighted” with their new steps. They gave us this glowing testimonial:

“Will and his team Che, Oliver and Glen did a wonderful job replacing our staircase. The original stone steps had been layered with concrete and asphalt which had cracked and was letting the rain in.

“We took this opportunity to replace the stairs with a more historically appropriate — and a much longer lived — York stone.

“The team were a delight to have around and their work is fantastic. While working they came prepared and cleaned up at the end of each day, even working in the heatwave!

“These guys are real stonemasons and did the work quickly, accurately and to such a high standard that folks will ring our door bell to find out who did our steps.

“We’ve had so many compliments and we love the sophisticated look of our home!”

About our work on this project

The existing staircase was worn, unsightly and leaking. It had been asphalted a few times over the years. Several of the railing stanchions were rusted beyond repair.

The property’s new owners contacted us as they wanted to restore the staircase to its period-correct appearance and functionality.

We began the project by visiting the property to confirm measurements, then produced design drawings for ordering stone and installation.

Once the client approved the design, we created the new Yorkstone steps in our workshop. On site we removed the railings and stripped the staircase of its old asphalt and concrete covered steps. Then we repaired the staircase structure, preparing it to receive the waterproofing system.

While work continued on site, we ordered and received new steel elements, and refurbished the railings in our workshop.

Back on site, we discovered an unusually large amount of wiring and piping beneath the old concrete steps, a problem we overcame to install the waterproofing.

Then we fitted the new Yorkstone steps and core drilled holes to accommodate the refurbished railings that we refitted.

We completed the job by rendering and redecorating the lower walls of the staircase.

The customer was delighted with the results, saying in their testimonial that:

“These guys are real stonemasons and did the work quickly, accurately and to such a high standard that folks will ring our door bell to find out who did our steps.

“We’ve had so many compliments and we love the sophisticated look of our home!”
