The Stone Steps and Paving team restored the natural stone staircase and flooring of a historic Georgian building in Robert Street, Embankment, London, WC2.
This five storey property in central London was being completely renovated. The Stone Steps and Paving team were called in to assess and then renovate the building’s impressive, complex, stone staircase. The staircase was badly damaged in numerous locations across all flights.
After an initial assessment of the staircase, the decision was made to clad the entire staircase in new Portland stone.
Before the Stone Steps and Paving team could order the stone in the correct quantities, we needed to calculate the complicated “ramp and twist” of the staircase surfaces. This work began with us stripping the staircase of all paint, glue and fixings, so we could take accurate measurements.
It took several days of using plum lines and laser levels to produce the calculations and the schedule of the stone needed for all the flights of stairs. Often there are small differences in staircase sizes over each floor so we could not assume the curve was continuous in its angle.
After measuring and documenting the small differences in every step, tread and riser, each step was numbered and the new Portland stone was ordered.
Once the stone arrived at our workshop, the process of installing each step, starting from the bottom, could begin. Constant checking of the precise measurements ensured each step was laid correctly.
The whole job took 2.5 months to complete, from start to finish.
The client, and the Stone Steps and Paving team, are very happy with the outcome.
