Projects in this gallery include:
- Navarino Road, Hackney, E8. Complete removal and reconstruction of a Victorian entrance staircase that was letting water into the habitable room beneath. Working under a fully independent scaffold with a temporary roof, we built a new waterproofed substructure with new York stone treads and risers, and carefully reinstating the original copings and capping stones. Completed in four weeks.
- Penzance Place, Notting Hill, W11. Replacement of a weathered front entrance staircase on a late Victorian townhouse, with single-piece York stone treads with a bullnosed leading edge. We then rebuilt and rendered the walls, and decorated them in Keim breathable mineral paint, and redecorated the railings. All complete in under two weeks.
- Malvern Road, Hackney, E8. The Stone Steps and Paving team removed the asphalt covering from a Victorian entrance staircase and pathway, and built a new waterproofing system. Then we laid new buff York stone steps and paving to match the original stone. We rebuilt the load-bearing side wall around the new stonework, then rendered and decorated in Keim breathable mineral paint. Completed in three and a half weeks.
- Aberdeen Park, Highbury, N5. Asphalt removed from the entrance staircase of a mid-Victorian villa in the Aberdeen Park conservation area, followed by structural repairs, a fibrous liquid waterproofing system and an overlay of single-piece bullnosed buff York stone treads and risers, with new York stone copings to the staircase walls and capping stones to the entrance piers, completed in three weeks.
- Acacia Road, St John’s Wood, NW8. A failed tiled overlay stripped from a late Victorian entrance staircase where water had reached the structure beneath, with structural repairs, waterproofing across the whole staircase, a new threshold to take the extra height, a 50mm York stone overlay with bullnosed edges, and new railings made by our specialist fabricator, completed on site in three weeks.
- Courtnell Street, Notting Hill, W2. We waterproofed the original staircase with a fibrous liquid waterproofer and overlaid it in Portland stone to suit the stucco lower floors. The team infilled the old coal hole with waterproofed concrete and recessed the coal chute cover into the platform stone to keep the original look. We then repaired the plinth and portico walls, decorated them in white breathable masonry paint and painted the railings in black Hammerite. Completed in 10 days.
- West End Lane, West Hampstead, NW6. The nosings on this asphalted staircase had been cut off, leaving treads only 22cm deep. We replaced the staircase with larger York stone treads, risers, threshold and paving, and cut a grip strip into each tread. A full waterproofing system now protects the boiler and meters in the room below, and the team recreated the unusual circular piers in concrete cast in a curved timber shutter. Completed in around two weeks.
- Warrington Crescent, Maida Vale, W9. Earlier overlays had left this curved basement entrance staircase with uneven steps, and the lightwell paving was bridging the damp course. We cut the tapering treads in our workshop from site templates, dug the paving down to the correct level and installed a new gully to improve drainage. The team then curved the new railings on site. Completed in four weeks.
- Trafalgar Avenue, Peckham, SE15. We replaced the entrance steps of a listed property in a conservation area once Southwark Council had approved our CAD drawings and stone sample. The Stone Steps and Paving team fitted a two-layer waterproofing system over the open vault beneath the steps and path, relaid the path in reclaimed riven York stone, and installed new smooth cut York stone treads and risers. We also had the railings shot blasted and refurbished. Completed in just over two weeks.
